Many years ago, when I was in graduate school, I attended a high school college fair as an alumnus college representative. I had been an undergraduate at Carleton College, a small liberal arts college in Northfield, Minnesota, and was enthusiastic about answering questions from prospective students. At an early point in the afternoon’s program, all the alumni present were called to the front of the room. I fielded the very first question, and it was trickier than I’d expected: “What is the single biggest impression you had about your undergraduate education?”
