Should Instructors Use AI for Grading?

AI has become a part of nearly all facets of teaching, from lesson development to exam creation to answering student questions. But grading is the last bastion of education where it has yet to make meaningful inroads. This is partly due to the visceral reaction that many instructors feel at the mere suggestion that they could use AI for grading. A quick survey of Reddit conversations on the topic found widespread resistance, with teachers using terms like “unconscionable,” “the very opposite of doing right by students,” and even “I hope you would consider quitting teaching before stooping to your students’ level.” This is ironic as grading is generally considered the greatest drudgery in teaching, and so you would think that teachers would welcome the opportunity to take grading off their shoulders.
