Creating Class Simulations from Documentaries

Higher education has always looked for ways to bridge theory and practice through applied learning practices, such as internships. Simulations are also an excellent way to give students experience with real-world situations, but setting them up can take a tremendous amount of work. I found a relatively simple solution: using documentary or docudrama videos for the simulation’s content. The proliferation of sites like YouTube and Vimeo, as well as subscription streaming platforms, means that there are professionally made videos on nearly any subject at a teacher’s disposal to build simulations around. I use one in my international politics class, but the model can apply to other subjects as well.
