We academics are lucky in many ways. Most individuals herald January 1 as a big time for resolutions, aiming to change big behaviors with the start of the New Year. When you teach, you have at least two (on the semester system), sometimes three opportunities per year to start anew. New terms are refreshing, but the start of a new academic year carries particular gravitas. Like January 1, the start of fall term is packed with potential. We have all truly had a chance to rest and recuperate over the summer, even if we did not capitalize on it. What are your new academic year resolutions? Effective teaching should include systematic reflection and modifications as needed. I have pulled together some key considerations for us all as we move ahead.
