Like many professors, I am just trying to keep my head above water when it comes to teaching and AI. A survey conducted in August 2024 of college faculty globally showed that 35 percent viewed AI as a challenge and 65 percent viewed it as an opportunity (Digital Education Council 2025). I feel that mixed perspective in my own teaching, especially in my online classes. AI seems like a natural fit to level up online learning and prepare students to succeed in a quickly changing world, but the online environment may also make it easier for students to abuse AI and offload their learning to a chatbot.
