When I started in academia, we made copies using a ditto machine. You created a “master” and attached it to a drum that would rotate and produce damp, purple-ink copies that smeared easily and had a strong chemical odor. There was another machine called a Thermofax that would take a printed document and produce a master using infrared light. I became the department’s Thermofax wizard.
