Experiential Learning: Less Talk, More Action

Experiential learning is “the process whereby knowledge is created through transformation of experience” (Kolb, 1984, p. 38). The benefits of experiential learning include increasing student engagement, supporting various learning styles, and fostering the link between theory and practice.

Shifting from traditional educational approaches can be unsettling; however, the benefits of experiential learning for students and educators makes this exciting new challenge worthwhile. First, evaluate and reflect upon your teaching.Consider these questions:

  • Are your students actually learning what you are hoping they learn?
  • Are you and your students having fun in the classroom?
  • Are your students engaged in the material?
