I haven't read the book but it sure sounds like something to pick up! This is something I really struggle with, especially since I am a woman of color (in a field dominated by white men) and I look younger than I am, so I often encounter students who don't treat me with the respect they show to older, more 'professor-looking' colleagues. But as I get older and get more comfortable with my role as a professor in general, I've started asking whether it is such a bad thing that students treat me with more familiarity, as long as they are learning. There are times when their lack of respect for my authority really can be a problem (e.g., talking in class) but I can see that there are other times when feeling more comfortable with me can be a really good thing.
