Interesting. I remember in college when I fell behind in a class, I wouldn't ask for help or go to review sessions because I would feel like I'm wasting peoples' time with exactly the questions you described... "Um... can you explain the whole unit?"

Perhaps (and if staff (or enterprising student) are willing) if there were a "reteaching" session a couple days before the Q/A session, where it was made clear the content covered would be introductory or key points. I personally was not embarrassed at not knowing the material and I'm sure others were in the same boat... I would have gladly sat in a room full of other "stupid" students because we would all know we're there for the same thing. The "smart" kids should know to save their "real" questions for the Q/A session and not attend the reteaching session. Also, perhaps the reteaching session would help the slower kids catch up and understand the material enough to develop questions for the Q/A session a couple days later.
